Proposed Tracy Ridge Wilderness Area Beginner Backpacking Weekend

Next June With FAW and Chapman State Park!

Good news, our beginning backpacking class with Chapman State Park was such a popular success this past September that we are planning on doing it again in 2017!

It is quite early, but you can definitely put this neat event on your 2017 calendar now. Friends of Allegheny Wilderness and Chapman State Park have confirmed that we are teaming up to facilitate a second installment of our beginning backpacking weekend into the stunning, undeveloped backcountry wilds of the proposed Tracy Ridge Wilderness Area in the Allegheny National Forest on June 17th and 18th, 2017. FAW will be joined by Jen Moore, the environmental educator from Chapman State Park, who will be the class leader.

Beginning orientation will be at Chapman State Park first thing on Saturday morning, June 17th, where we will describe what to bring in your backpack and how best to pack it, how to dress, other basics, etc., and then we will all shuttle up to Tracy Ridge.

The hike will be kept relatively short — there are a lot of trail options on the beautiful interconnected hiking-only trails of the Tracy Ridge Hiking Trails system, including a portion of the nationally-recognized 4,600-mile North Country National Scenic Trail on which no motorized or mechanized incursions are ever allowed. The route will certainly be less than ten miles round-trip, and perhaps closer to five miles. We will change it up a bit from the route we used this year. We will camp within the proposed wilderness on Saturday night and hike out on Sunday.

More details will be issued when Jen gets back to work at Chapman in March following her winter break. There will likely be a charge to help with the facilitation of this beginning backpacking program, to help pay for food and other costs. If you have ever wanted to try your hand at backpacking but have needed a little nudging to get out there and give it a shot, this is the opportunity for you! Priority will be given to those who were not able to join us on this year’s trip, and to those who have never gone backpacking before.

Get it on your calendar now, watch for more details in March, and we’ll hope to see you on the trail.
